Avoiding Student Rental Scams
There has been a 30% increase in Accommodation Fraud so far in 2022 compared to 2019 with an average of €1,300 being stolen according to Gardai. It’s vital that Students stay vigilant and be wary of rental scams as they start hunting for Student Accommodation.
- Be Informed -Familiarise yourself with the average rent prices in your chosen area and do your research to make sure addresses actually exist.
- Be Secure - Keep copies of all correspondence & only use legitimate, well known rental agencies.
- Be Alert - Don’t make any payments for accommodation until you have seen it, are happy with its condition, have signed a contract & received the keys.
- Be Wary - Watch out for advertisements where the person letting the accommodation will only communicate via messenger or WhatsApp & asks you to send money to a random PayPal account, wire it by Western Union or pay in gift cards.
